Picture the scene: It’s the day after a busy social event; you’ve overdone the ‘people time’ and you feel frazzled and fragile.
On top of that you’re feeling stuck – your brain is frozen, and no matter what you do you can’t shake that feeling of doom and comparison and guilt that you can’t seem to get your act together to do any productive work.
(This isn’t a new feeling – it’s quite familiar now, and it also gives you a great excuse for not being visible in your business).
It can be so easy to justify not doing anything scary (such as making that video, or making those business phone calls) because you’re not feeling quite ‘right’.
I know because I’ve been there myself….
How do you get out of feeling stuck?
When I’m feeling stuck – with loads of stuff to do but my mind is blank, and no amount of pushing is getting me anywhere, I stop.
I stop what I’m trying to do and become conscious of what’s going on.
I stop pushing…. and check in with myself.
I ask myself “How are you feeling?”
A simple question (maybe too simple) but a very powerful one.
It forces me to become present, to come out of my head and back into my body.
“How are you feeling?”
I write it all down as it’s happening …
“I feel frustrated that I can’t think straight”
“I’ve got so much to do and I’m not doing any of it”
“I feel tired/exhausted/drained”
Then I ask myself “What do you need?”
I write down the answers …
“I need some fresh air”
“I need a nap”
Then I give myself what I need…
(Shock horror! How on earth can you let yourself SLEEP when you’ve got so much to do?)
It might seem too self-indulgent, or even counter productive, but it works!
When the alternative is hours of wasted time, pushing and still getting nowhere – it makes perfect sense to stop and give myself exactly what I need.
I set the alarm for 10-15 mins and snuggle down with a blanket and pillow in my office and take a nap.
I wake up feeling refreshed and brighter, and 9/10 times I’ve then got my energy back and I’m feeling inspired into focussed action!
I’ve written more about how to get stuff done more effectively here.
How doing the unthinkable to get out of feeling stuck, can be the best thing for your business visibility!
Next time you’re feeling stuck and not very productive, try asking yourself
“How are you feeling?”
“What do you need?”
Whatever comes up for you, allow yourself to have it – even if that means taking a long nap or taking time out to do something that nourishes you.
When you’re a sensitive introvert, you need to be extra vigilant and conscious about how you’re feeling and what you need, no matter what that is – because when you’re fully nourished, you’ll have the energy to take those scary actions on the things that really matter in your business.
Self care is not selfish, it’s essential (no matter what your inner critic may tell you)!
The world needs you to take the best care of you, so you can get out there and serve the people you’re here to help!
Over to you:
I’d love to know how this lands with you. What’s your experience of feeling stuck , and what do you need to be fully nourished?
